by in Places we've been, Things we've seen

Well that was Saturday. Now its Sunday and we’re headed north again this time to the Daintree and Cape Tribulation. Lin wanted to go to the Port Douglas markets, we didn’t so we drove up alone this time. We know most of the road backwards by now and reckon it’d be a great Sprite road if it wasn’t so far to go (bit too far for a cruze night)

First port of call was the Daintree Experience Centre only to find that the tree top walk was $32.00 per head. Overpriced to buggary so we just had an over-priced sandwich for lunch and peered out the window at more tropical forest. I had done the tree top walk in 2003 and had not been too impressed – thought the Otway Fly in Vic and the Walpole tree top walk in WA were better. Of course to get into the Daintree we had to cross the river and I’m pleased to report that Jude didn’t get seasick.

Back in 03 I was impressed by Cape Tribulation. Not only was it a beautiful beach, it was totally deserted. Amazing what 11 years does to population growth. This time it was overcast, dull and crawling with bloody tourists…

so we ventured a bit further up the coast towards Cooktown. Once past Cape Tribulation the road turns to sh…  Boy is it fun – ruts, hill climbs, water crossings, all as a test for the Telegraph Track up to the Tip….

Not much traffic and no bloody tourists.

Back to Cairns.

Monday dawned late and dull. Weather most Victorian. Time to have  look around town. This is more of a resort town, not appearing to have the built history of Townsville. Even the foreshore is muddy and unattractive although a swimming pool at the shore is quite good…

The next few days became R&R time as Jude attempted recovery from another bout of pneumonia. A visit to the Cairns hospital ensued and another few days went by before we could comfortably move on. Saturday off to Cooktown for a few more quiet days before we head to the Tip.

Passed through Mt Molloy on the way through and stopped for lunch….

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bigger burger and it did beat me.

An interesting old artefact at Mt Molloy, something according to Wiki-pedia to do with an old timber mill….

but its application defeats my imagination.

Now to Cooktown. Had booked caravan park and was told at the time that space was at a premium. Also tee’d up storage of truck and trailer for when we headed to the Tip. Well there’s more to tell but it will wait for the next instalment, although, suffice to say, we’re still in Cooktown on Friday 25 July.

    Geez nanny, again?

Looking forward to seeing your updates from your trip to the tip! I don’t seem to recall your trip up that way last time, but I guess blogging about it all was not a big thing back then. How’s the winnie fairing?

    Regards,
    g@z.

We/I haven’t been to the Tip yet. We set out the other day but a rock through the drivers side window just a couple of hours up brought us back to Cooktown in a bath of glass, cold and dusty for repairs. Will be a week waiting for new glass.

Winnies been fine although having now stated so it will probably rebel. Its due to go into storage again once the Suzie is repaired for the couple of weeks we take to explore the Tip, so a holiday might do it some good.

Sorry to hear about Jude and her returning Pneumonia. It must be very unpleasant and worrying for her. All the best for your swift recovery Jude.
The Daintree has always appealed to me as a place to visit, but it sounds like it has now been ‘discovered’.
Cairns has always been on my wish list to visit, and it would be good to catch up with the Hepburns up there too. I hope you find time to catch up with them too.
I have heard some horror stories of getting to the ‘Top’, so I hope it goes well, and mind the crocs!
That is a real blow about the Suzie and the window. hope it is fixed real soon.
    Cheers
    John

  3. From Jen and Pete Hay:

Sorry Jude to hear about your recurring bouts of pneumonia. It must be getting you down. Here’s hoping you don’t experience any more problems and can return home soon and can have a much deserved long and inactive peaceful rest without feeling the urge to have to get up and go exploring. After all holidays can be exhausting! and being unwell in a strange place can be depressing and harder to cope with. Good Luck and wishing you much improved health. By the way Barry how are you coping with your knee and finger injuries? Hope you’re, okay too. Can’t say the same here. The February spinal surgery was not at all successful and I can barely walk, plus both Knees and both rotator cuffs need surgery, plus the pain is never ending.Plus have been waiting over one year now since falling off the roof to have the internal injuries operated on. F…ing surgeons can’t get their acts together and seem to get great pleasure out of people’s suffering. One plus however I have finally got an appointment in Sept. to see a doctor at the “Barbara Walker Pain Management Clinic” after being on the waiting list for 2 years.Consequently I haven’t managed any work around this place for 5 months and it hasn’t stopped raining every night for months and the days are so dismal that the grass never dries out to try to cut it down and the thousands of weeds keep on growing, and can’t rent numerous vans beacause I Can’t climb up a ladder to repair them.Pray like buggery that some big Queensland Developers buy it. They are due to come and see us in the next few weeks. We are one of three they have selected to consider because of the amount of land and the chance to fit out with their relocatable homes that they manufacture. Apparently they have developed dozens of these villages along the NSW and Queensland coast and now wish to venture into Vic.Wish us well and Love and Happy Travels to you both Love from Jen& Pete.
